The Past Continuous Tense
was(1 л. и 3 л. ед. ч.)/were + 4ф. глагола(смысл . глагол + ing)
Употребляется:
Для выражения действия, происходящего в определенный момент в прошлом. Этот момент ясен из контекста или обозначен:
а) точным указанием времени
I was reading a book at 5 o’clock – Я читал книгу в 5 часов.
б) другим действием, выраженным глаголом в прошедшем времени группы Indefinite
We were doing our homework when our mother entered the room – Мы делали домашнюю работу, когда наша мама вошла в комнату .
для выражения действия, которое совершалось в определенный отрезок времени, но не происходившее непрерывно
He was writing a play during the summer – Он писал пьесу в течении лета.
I was taking my exams in May – Я сдавал экзамены в мае.
Обратите внимание на обстоятельства времени характерные для Past Continuous:
- at … o’clock yesterday
- when mother came home
- from 5 till 6 yesterday
- the whole evening (весь вечер)
- while … ( в то время как, пока, тогда как)
- still (все еще)

But just as he (shut) his window he (see) a man. The man (try) to climb over the garden wall. He was a thief. When he saw Jack’s father at the window he (jump) off the wall and ran away. Jack’s father (run) after him. There was a car at the end of the street. The thief reached the car but just as he (get) into it Jack’s father (catch) him.
